The Department of Building Economics at the University of Moratuwa was founded in 1983 under the patronage of the late Professor Siri Caldera. It is currently the pioneer Sri Lankan institute to offer undergraduate degree programmes in Quantity Surveying and Facilities Management. The Department is unique in nature as it is the only department which offers degree programmes in Quantity Surveying and Facilities Management fields in the whole national university system in Sri Lanka.

The undergraduate programme leading to Honours Degree of Bachelor of Science in Quantity Surveying commenced in 1986 and the graduation of the first cohort of students was in 1991. The first programme revision of the Quantity Surveying programme came in 1992. The programme was further revised and upgraded to the semester based modular system in order to be in line with the current international trends in the profession of Quantity Surveying, in 2005.

In year 2005, the Department started a new degree programme, Honours Degree of Bachelor of Science in Facilities Management, in order to cater the world-wide demand for the Facilities Managers. Theprogramme aims to produce professionals who will be capable of managing facilities in the built environment. The graduation of the first cohort of Facilities Management students of the Department was in the year 2010.

The Department started a self-funded Masters programme in Project Management in 1996, Masters programme in Construction Law and Dispute Resolution in 2011 and another Masters programme in Occupational Safety and Health Management in 2013.
