BEMRU Workshop on "Advancement in Academic Career and Enhancing Research"

The Building Economics Research unit of the Department of Building Economics organized a workshop to encourage advancement in academic career and to enhance research in favor of the academic staff of the Department on 20th December 2016. The workshop was a full day programme covering the topics; ‘Aspiring to be an Academic’ (by Ch.QS. Indunil Seneviratne , Senior Lecturer), ‘Ultimate goal of been an academic’ (by Ch.QS. (Mrs.) Kanchana Perera, Chief Student counselor-UoM), Research Collaboration and Funding (by Dr. (Mrs.) Yasangika Sandanayake, Head of the Department), ‘Research Dissemination and Recognition (by Dr. (Ms.) Thanuja Ramachandra, Director of Post Graduate Studies, Faculty of Architecture), ‘Post graduate Pathways’ (by Dr. (Ms.) Sachie Gunathilake, Senior Lecturer), and the ‘Journey towards PhD’ (by Dr. (Mrs.) Anuradha Waidyasekara and Dr. (Mrs.) Chandanie Hadiwatttage). The workshop was concluded with an open discussion on BEMRU strategic plan for 2017-2020, where the academic staff shared their views and proposed strategies on academic progression and research enhancement.

Donation of Projection System with LED Display Units

In celebration of the 10th anniversary of the 18th Quantity Surveying alumni batch, a projection system with LED display units worth of 1 Million Rupees was donated to the Department of building Economics by the graduates of the 18th Quantity Surveying alumni batch on 17th December 2016. This is the biggest donation of this nature that the Department has received so far and will largely benefit the enhancement of the student learning environment. The academic staff of the Department of Building Economics, and the graduates of the 18th QS alumni batch together with their families participated in the official launch of the system and the 10th anniversary celebrations.

FM Symposium 2016: Expanding Horizons

The Department of Building Economics in collaboration of FM graduates organized a symposium to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the B.Sc. (Hons) in Facilities Management Degree Programme 25th November 2016. 

The Degree Programme was commenced by the Department of Building Economics, University of Moratuwa in the year 2006 under the patronage of the University Grants Commission of Sri Lanka. This is the only FM higher education programme recognised internationally with the accreditation by the Royal Institution Chartered Surveyors (RICS), UK, in the whole Asia Pacific Region. The Department has already produced six batches of FM graduates to the industry who are serving in well established companies in Sri Lanka as well as in foreign countries.

In celebration of the successful endearment of its 10th year, “FM Symposium 2016: Expanding Horizons” was organized by the Department of Building Economics with the support of the FM graduates, on 25th November 2016. The event took place from 5.00 p.m. onwards at OZO- Colombo. 

Key Note Speech on “Commissioning and Operation of Smart Buildings” was delivered by the Managing Director, Eutech Group, Singapore, Dr. Hari Gunasingham. Vice Chancellor, University of Moratuwa, Prof. Ananda Jayawardena was the Chief Guest of the evening while Prof. Chitra Weddikkara graced the event as the Guest of Honour. Deputy Vice Chancellor, University of Moratuwa, Prof. Rahula Attalage, the Dean, Faculty of Architecture, University of Moratuwa, Prof. Lalith De Silva, President, Institute of Facilities Management Sri Lanka, Mr. Elmo Fernando, invitees from different industrial sectors, FM graduates, academic and non-academic staff of the Department of Building Economics dignified the occasion as well.

49th BEMRU Colloquium on Post Occupancy Evaluation of Building

The 49th research colloquium of the Building Economics Management Research Unit (BEMRU) was held at the Boardroom of the Faculty of Architecture on 14th December 2016. The colloquium on Post Occupancy Evaluation of Buildings , was delivered by  Dr. Usha Iyer-Raniga (B.Arch, M.A.S.A, PhD); the Deputy Head-International  School of Property, Construction and Project Management RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia. Members of the academic staff of the Department of Building Economics participated in the session.

BESS Blood Donation Campaign 2016

Building Economics Student Society (BESS) of University of Moratuwa successfully organized a blood donation campaign on 9th November 2016, at the premises of the Department of Building Economics. The campaign was held from 9 am to 3 pm. The event was inaugurated with a Dharma Preaching. Around 200 donors participated for the blood donation.
